Davis-Scott Family YMCA

We're thrilled to announce that we've been selected as an Impact San Antonio 2023 Grant Award Finalist in the Health and Wellness category.

Since 1876, the YMCA of Greater San Antonio has continuously adapted to meet our community's evolving needs. The Davis-Scott Family YMCA was founded in 1944 and is currently the oldest facility still in operation within our association. The renovation project at the Davis-Scott Family YMCA gymnasium holds the potential to make a profound impact. Over 1,800 youth enjoy activities like basketball, volleyball, and teen programs each year, and 1,000 community members take part in public events, such as the annual community prayer breakfast, MLK march, health fairs, food drives, and more.

The importance of this project becomes clear when we consider the health disparities present in this community. Studies have shown that racial and ethnic minority populations face disparities in chronic disease prevalence and management. In the 78203 zip code, life expectancy is a mere 70-74 years, a stark contrast to the 90 or more years in other parts of Bexar County. Access to recreation facilities, like gyms, has been linked to lower obesity rates and better health outcomes in low-income neighborhoods.

The Davis-Scott gymnasium renovation is a long-overdue project that will bring much-needed opportunities to our Eastside and Davis-Scott community.
